The Tangential’s Last-Minute Gift Guide

The Tangential’s Last-Minute Gift Guide

~2000 years ago, Jesus was born on December 25th. Because he’s a selfless guy, he said “Every year on my birthday, how bout everyone gets presents, not just me? Forever?” And thus Christmas began. If you’re getting a late start in participating in this ritual, never fear. Here are some products you can buy for those you love, like or even fear.

For the person with a bunch of dead plants at their house:

Click and Grow Plants

I love plants but I can’t seem to keep them alive. That’s why I was excited to learn about these NASA-inspired plants that look like they’re growing in Apple computers. You can get flowers or even a small herb garden.

For the person who wants to eat more produce:

Food huggers

These colorful little food lovers are way more fun than sandwich bags. Plus they preserve the beauty of your produce.

For the healthy person who likes gadgets:

Jawbone UP

I’ve tried a few different activity tracking bracelets (as well as a Pokemon pedometer in the 6th grade) and this one is my favorite. The software is fun and full of rich data (you can see exactly what time you got up to pee in the middle of the night even). It should be scary to get to know yourself as well as the UP lets you, but it keeps it lighthearted.

For the person who can’t get down with briefcases:

Herschel Bags

Herschel bags are tech-friendly and hardy, perfect for someone who travels a lot for work, while still feeling fun and casual.

For the lady who likes local jewelry:

Owl and Lark Jewelry

Edgy, pretty and affordable. I saw her stuff at a craft fair and had a hard time deciding what to pick.

For the kid whose imagination has not yet been deadened by the world:

Rainbow in My Room

I totally got this for my niece and nephew, along with this book.

ARainbowofMyOwn

For the short person:

I’d Rather Be Short

All short people know a secret, which is that being short is actually the best for 100 reasons. My fellow short person and fellow name-haver Becky Murphy wrote and illustrated a book enumerating them. My favorite is #11 – you’re never expected to help friends move.

For the avid reader:

Oyster Books Subscription

The Netflix of books is here! Hook your giftee up with a few months.

For the beer enthusiast:

Indeed Old Friend Ale

Run over to Indeed, grab a beer for yourself, and order a growler of this for your lucky friend. They will like you at least 15% more after you give them this.

For the Detroit enthusiast who merits a very, very expensive gift:

A Shinola Watch

I have recently become obsessed with Detroit design company Shinola. I don’t even wear a watch but I spent a really long time staring in awe at their collection of watches. They are well-designed without being needlessly ritzy. Check out other Shinola gear if the watches are too expensive (which they probably are unless you are a rich person).

For the person who just got a record player:

Mariah Carey’s Christmas album on vinyl:

shopping

This is actually super expensive but I put it on here anyway cuz it seems like a gift that would really anger a college-aged guy who just got a record player and is experimenting with hipsterdom.

For the human with a heart:

Christmas Boo

I have the normal Boo toy and I have to say my boyfriend and I have gotten weird with it. We talk to it and talk about it when we’re not home. Anyway … how extra adorable is this santa version?

And you could get him a friend

For the person who likes to treat their feet:

Minnetonka Mocassins

My sister asked for a pair of these and she knows what’s what.

I hope this helped give you a few ideas. Get thee Amazon Prime and good luck.
